Sibelius 7.1.3 Windows 7 64bit 4Gb ram, 3Ghz ![]() That is my solution for an old XP box dedicated to the support of a piece of Roland sound hardware for which Windows 7 drivers are not supplied. The VM provides a measure of protection against exposure to vulnerabilities on the net and as long as the application software performs satisfactorily, it would not need to be updated either.Īnother alternative is to keep a separate Windows box, frozen in update status and isolated from the web. You are right that a VM would still be running Windows, but it need not be kept up to date. Look at the various discussions on this forum about whether or not, and when, to update from Sib 7.1.3 to 7.5 So often, these updates only provide 'unwanted' bells and whistles. ![]() Microsoft, in common with other providers of applications, need to keep providing product updates in order to keep the revenue stream flowing. The final cost was much higher than I had anticipated. The cost of the upgrade was reasonable but I then found that lots of software wouldn't run particularly well on 7 so upgrades had to be bought. I went from XP to 7 about a year ago because my older machine kept crashing. Starting with XP, though, the platform got stable enough for many and that's why Microsoft is having such a hard time persuading XP'ers to go up to Windows 8. The best alternative is MuseScore, which is both free and Open Source. There are more than 25 alternatives to Melody Assistant for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD and iPad. In the 'old days', we had to buy upgrades for Windows because the performance of early variants was mediocre. Melody Assistant is described as is dedicated to music writing, printing and rendering and is a music production app in the audio & music category. My personal 'hic' is that I don't want to pay for the badge on a mac and at the same time I am wary of the poor quality of Windows as evidenced by the recurrent security vulnerabilities on that platform. Others are particularly fond of linux for various reasons. Some have a dislike of Microsoft dating from way back. Well, Laurence, reasons vary with the people.
